After putting out their highly impressive eponymous LP earlier this year, Brooklyn-via-Denver’s neo-kraut troop Woodsman return with a new EP this fall that offers a glimpse into their improvisational studio recording process. Acting as a companion piece to the full-length record, the EP features a raw, extended version of the album’s final cut, “Teleseparation,” in the form of a 30 minute jam cut into in 4 parts with no overdubs. A transcendent, stream-of-consciousness sonic journey, bathed in repetitive guitar atmospheres and totemic rhythmic interplay. Zone out to the Teleseparation EP below.

For the past few years, Kyle Connolly has existed as a regular familiar amongst the Toronto psych scene, roving around in bands like Milk Lines, Beliefs, and Breeze. But on August 26, the soft-spoken multi-instrumentalist steps out on his own with the debut self-titled album by his own band, Wish. Featuring the talents of Peter Gosling (Decades, Lobby) on drums, Emily Bitze (Milk Lines) on bass, and long time friend/musical collaborator Josh Korody (Beliefs, Breeze) on guitar, Wish play a sort of psychedelic dream pop that often tends to wander into jammy krautrock territory. Check out their video for the song “Retro Grade” below. Wish plays tonight at the Garrison in Toronto.

Before moving back to Toronto earlier this year, I remember scoping out the local music scene and coming across Optical Sounds—a independent Toronto label fixated on the burgeoning Great Northern psych community. It was here that I first discovered the Sun Stone Revolvers (formerly The Revolvers), a band that took little time to make their way to the top of my “list of bands to see” once I got back to my hometown. Not long after my return, I was lucky enough to catch a show put together by the good folks at Exhale Presents and to say it was a nice welcoming would be an understatement. A true rock band at the core, Sun Stone Revolvers venture through a range of sounds from spaced-out, dark-psych territory to blissed-out tribal chants to motorik, kraut-inspired grooves. And they look fucking cool doing it too. You can stream their most recent album, Spaceship X, below or purchase it on vinyl/CD via Optical Sounds.

Since forming in 2006, longtime friends Tommy Eisner and Linda Beecroft—together known as Golden Animals—have split time between their gritty Brooklyn abode and the sun-soaked lands of the California desert. Crafting songs that draw on inspirations from both of their homes—love, friendship, seclusion—they view their two bases as complementary influences, shaping their sound equally but very differently.
On September 24, Golden Animals will release their new album, Hear Eye Go, via The Reverberation Appreciation Society in conjunction with Burger Records. The album was recorded by Matt Boynton (MGMT, Kurt Vile) at Vacation Island Recordings, and by the band themselves at their own studio. Joe LaPorta (Foo Fighters, Beach House) mastered the album at The Lodge. Watch the video for “All Your Life” below.

The Night Beats embark on a Gonzo style journey down the West Coast in their latest video for “The Seven Poison Wonders.” The video finds them in the midst of an encounter with a hitchhiker who turns out to be a road-demon in disguise, presumably depicting their everyday life on the road. Directed by Brendhan Bowers, all footage was shot on 16mm colour negative film thru WA, OR, and CA state.
“The Seven Poison Wonders” comes off their excellent new album Sonic Bloom out September 24th via The Reverberation Appreciation Society and Burger Records. Preorder the album NOW.
