Jonathan Wilson ~ “La Isla Bonita” (Madonna)

Back in 2007, West Coast producer/session man Jonathan Wilson contributed a version of the 80s FM radio hit “La Isla Bonita” to a Madonna tribute album, titled Through The Wilderness. While that doesn’t sound all that interesting, Wilson’s re-imagining of the tune takes the core structure of the song and throws all of it out the window. Barely clinging to the melody, Wilson refurbishes the song with his laid-back West Coast touch and a psyched-out guitar intro, which as Aquarium Drunkard points out, is quite reminiscent of the lead-in to “The Other One.” Simply put, it’s a stunningly raw take on an otherwise average tune.

Jonathan Wilson ~ “Desert Raven” & Ticket Giveaway

Laurel Canyon producer and session man Jonathan Wilson makes his way to New York City this Friday for a show taking place at Mercury Lounge.  Wilson, who is quickly making a name as one of the best live acts on the scene today, churns out lush psych-folk with Garcia meets Gilmour guitar lines and traditional analog recording techniques. In 2011, Wilson released his solo debut, Gentle Spirit, a set of spirited psych-folk tunes (many feature Wilson as the sole performer) that recall some of the Canyon’s past musical inhabitants, and most of which clock in around  six minutes long.

Check out the video for the highly impressive “Desert Raven” (one of the best songs in years) below and read on for details on how you can win tickets to see Wilson this Friday at Mercury Lounge.
