NEW MUSIC △ Kikagaku Moyo

From the far east of Japan hails Kikagaku Moyo, a bohemian tribe of psychedelic rangers led by cheiftains Go Kurosawa and Tomo Katsurada. During the summer months of 2012, while sequestered among the foothills outside of Tokyo, the band was born out of a series of late-night jam sessions from which it seems they were able to tap into a uniquely cosmic domain of the Mind at Large. Inspired by the music of their forefathers in Acid Mothers Temple, Kikagaku’s trip expands its journey through ambling West Coast psych jams ala The Electronic Hole and Eastern-guided melodies like those of The Incredible String Band. We’re still coming down from their spellbinding performance at this year’s Austin Psych Fest.

Kikagaku Moyo’s sophomore album, Forest of Lost Children, comes out May 20th on Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records.

Video: Golden Animals – ” All Your Life”

Since forming in 2006, longtime friends Tommy Eisner and Linda Beecroft—together known as Golden Animals—have split time between their gritty Brooklyn abode and the sun-soaked lands of the California desert. Crafting songs that draw on inspirations from both of their homes—love, friendship, seclusion—they view their two bases as complementary influences, shaping their sound equally but very differently.

On September 24, Golden Animals will release their new album, Hear Eye Go,  via The Reverberation Appreciation Society in conjunction with Burger Records. The album was recorded by Matt Boynton (MGMT, Kurt Vile) at Vacation Island Recordings, and by the band themselves at their own studio. Joe LaPorta (Foo Fighters, Beach House) mastered the album at The Lodge. Watch the video for “All Your Life” below.

Pre-order Here Eye Go via The Reverberation Appreciation Society.

Video: Night Beats – “The Seven Poison Wonders”

The Night Beats embark on a Gonzo style journey down the West Coast in their latest video for “The Seven Poison Wonders.” The video finds them in the midst of an encounter with a hitchhiker who turns out to be a road-demon in disguise, presumably depicting their everyday life on the road. Directed by Brendhan Bowers, all footage was shot on 16mm colour negative film thru WA, OR, and CA state.

“The Seven Poison Wonders” comes off their excellent new album Sonic Bloom out September 24th via The Reverberation Appreciation Society and Burger Records. Preorder the album NOW. Night Beats play The Silver Dollar in Toronto on September 5, Brooklyn on November 9 and New York on November 12 (full list of dates below).

Night Beats – “Outta Mind”

It’s been a while since we heard something new from one of today’s best psych bands, the Night Beats, who’s members we last saw dressed in sloppy drag roving around the fields of Austin Psych Fest. Several months before that, they were pooling sweat and handing out mushrooms from the stage at the Knit. Well, these Austin-based lads that tap into that city’s psychedelic past better than perhaps any other, are back with a new record entitled Sonic Bloom. Recorded in a Tacoma, WA warehouse, the album, which perfectly captures the Beats at their drugged-fueled, raved-up best, is set for release on September 24 via the Reverberation Appreciation Society in conjunction with Burger Records. The first track, “Outta Mind,” is now streaming below. You can, listen below.

Al Lover – “Snake Hands” (Feat. White Fence)

Al Lover is a producer from San Francisco who mines the realms of contemporary and past garage and psychedelic rock into harsh, yet spacey abrasive beats. Influenced as much by The 13th Floor Elevators as DJ Shadow, Al combines crunchy drums, shaky percussion, chopped samples and layers of textured effects to create an unexplored path for psychedelic music, offering an earthy and loose approach that sounds more like you’re listening to a DMT fueled psych band than a beat made on an MPC. For his latest creation, he’s teamed up with Tim Presley, AKA White Fence, on a track featured on his debut 7″. Listen to the track below and pre-order the wax via PNKSLM Recordings.

Also be sure to check out the first volume in Al Lover’s new mix series ‘Elevated Transmissions.’

Director Calvin Millar has assembled a terrific video recap of this year’s Austin Psych Fest, held for the first time at the scenic Carson Creek Ranch just outside of Austin, TX. For those who were there, relive this wondrous weekend with Mr. Millar’s lovely video. For those who weren’t, tune in and hope to plan better for next year.

Austin Psych Fest will hold its 7th annual gathering at Carson Creek Ranch on the weekend of May 2-4, 2014.

Goat – “Dreambuilding”

One of the bands we’re most excited to check out at this year’s Austin Psych Fest is the ever mysterious Swedish group Goat, who perform as the final group in the Elevation Amphiteatre on Sunday night. The band exploded onto the scene last year with the release of their debut album, World Music, on Rocket Recordings and are known to adorn animal masks on stage. Does anyone remember “mystique?”

Listen to title track “Dreambuilding” off a new 7″ out June 4 via Sub Pop.
